today's exchange
Hurray for SJIMB! Today's exchange was a success, although we could do much better than we showed. Show all the other bands that although we got a silver for last SYF, we are able to achieve. One cannot expect a gold medal to drop from the sky. Ouch. If other schools can attain a gold, why can't we? We stand for our rights and fight till the end. If everyone just puts in a little more effort, we can do it. Remember that bread does not magically appear on your table. Keep up the hardwork and determination. Show the judges that we can do it. We will achieve that gold medal. So please, put in more effort in your music. Exams are over, and you have all the time in the world to practise. Practice makes perfect. But if nobody's perfect, why practise? Remember, from our humble beginnings, the day we were born, onwards and upwards we move on and on. Kinda reminds me of the song, Check Yes Juliet. "Run Baby Run, don't ever look back." We must move forward, and always improve. Don't let our seniors down. They have done so much for the band, don't let it go to waste. As we enter the Singapore Conference Hall for SYF, remember that we have done our best. Remember that we can achieve our goals. Remember all the hardwork and effort you have put in. Remember your past mistakes, and don't make the same mistakes again. With this mindset, we shall walk onto the stage and shine like stars. If others can do it, why can't we? We are the best. Remember that SJIMB used to be the best band in Singapore. We shall uphold its name. Seek to strive and not to yield. Do your best. We are the mighty men of the SJIMB. Nothing can stop us.

Common Test
Oh yeah, common test.... Nothing quite like it, except for, well, mid-year and final-year and streaming and 'o' levels. But yeah, there's nothing quite like it. I really feel like common test is insignificant. After all that just happened in the band common test is like... just some worksheet to be done in class. After I tightened my braces, I found all the problems I had when I put them on came back. The pain, the lack of stamina, the tone, the articulation, the constipation (type of sound) and the high note struggling. Why the hell have I been in the bandroom for 6 days a week for the past eight months? And then while I reflect upon the SCH rehearsal and the fruitless sectionals, and all the horrors of getting silver and the URGING of XX XXX and XXX XXXX to beat XXXXX, on comes along this guy called Dr XXX XXXXX XXXX URGING us just like XX XXX did to do our best for common test. Oh right, my goal in life was to study hard and become rich, sorry I forgot. But amongst all this, the most amazing thing is, the moment I touch Jane, everything is gone. No more Gold Medal no more Common Test no more wasted effort. It's just me and Jane and playing that catchy tune that has been running through my head for the entire day. Maybe that's why I don't find it awkward to come down for practice everyday. Do you feel awkward if you played computer everyday? I kind of got the same feeling. I remember when I nearly failed my super easy indices test, I was gripping it so tight it tore (a little). Last period over I went to the bandroom and started practicing. There was no more indices test no more lousy math. Nothing mattered. Yes, I know, stupid, idiotic, fantastic (derived from fantasy), impossible. I wonder though, do you feel like that?

Once there was a class, and their music teacher was a professional who came to the countryside for a little escape and inspiration. Their first question was: "What is music?" And so the teacher took out her flute and sweetened the air with the playful flutters of a butterfly as a little girl skipped through the bright meadows of England. She took out her trumpet and a wave smashed against the rocky shores, the flags were raised and the majestic army emerged from their gargantuan castle, heads up, full with pride and glory. She took out her trombone and the curtain of a full moon descended. An eerie mansion stood out from the middle of nowhere. Bats infested its walls and from one sole window, a stumpy figure grinning with evil mischief. An army of the Great Empire marched out of their fortress to meet the opposition of the rebels, swords clashed under a crimson evening sky, the ground, imitating its colour. “Miss, that was beautiful, but, what is music.”
“Well, music is a person who toils day and night with his or her instrument, who has achieved perfect synchronization between flesh and material. It was beauty in its purest.”
“If so, Miss,” a voice raised from the back of the class. “What’s a band?”

Soundcheck
Basically, we could have very well exploited that $1200 in a more effective way. To me, it's just like going to Japan to meet a maestro and simply have him repeat all that Mr Tan said just cause we can't follow properly. I wonder why we can't undo a mistake immediately when it has been pointed out. Is it because we need time to adapt to this new change, or is it because we aren't practicing resulting in insufficient skill to correct mistakes? Maybe it's because all Singaporeans do is care about themselves, to hell with all that others say, just chiong. Well, I have seen my Primary school band walk away with Silver twice. Once because 'the tuba empty saliva then cleaners buay song'. Another because the cymbal never clash properly. Miraculously, these tiny mistakes cost 25 marks and above each. I don't want to go away with silver ranting on about how Kelly Tang that day never dig ear, or how my braces just nice contract too tightly on that day. I want a chance to march off in glory, reflected every single painful moment I experienced for the Gold. Everybody says we are there, we can do it, just remember to stay together, to watch conductor etc etc etc. Funny thing is, that was what - I mean all - I had to do in Primary School to get the Gold, and I didn't do it. Not now, this year, with the chains of spirit and the foundation of endless practices, we will get the Gold. All we have to do is want to. If only everything was that simple.

Tomorrow (Confirmed by pinren)
Your BS said that you can wear anything to school, just change to concert attire by 12.30pm.
Hope this clears any enquiries.

Please don't wear concert attire to school in the bus, you'd look like a total nut.
